Ladakh's cultural communication with the past

These rock carvings, scattered across the Indus valley, date back to the Neolithic period and show scenes of ibex hunting, ancient symbols, and early nomadic life. They serve as a testament to the diverse cultures and trade routes that intersected in Ladakh. Protecting these open-air galleries from modern construction is essential to preserving the historical memory of the Himalayas.

Each drawing etched into the dark desert varnish of the boulders holds clues about ancient climate, migration, and spiritual beliefs. By encouraging responsible cultural tourism and partnering with local historians, Dolkhar hopes to shed light on these vulnerable historic assets and ensure their preservation.
